Loss on the Mason-Dixon Trail (and how you can help)
On Thursday, August 19th, 2024, there was a report for a missing hiker. The following day, Joshua Markey (the missing hiker) was found near Sawmill Run but, sadly, he had succumbed to injuries from a fall.
From the family:
Joshua Markey was born on March 13, 1977 to Kip and Sue Markey. He grew up living along the Mason Dixon trail in the area of Green Branch Rd, Felton, PA where he and his younger brother, Seth, spent a large part of their childhood exploring. As he got older, Josh joined his father and his brother in the family business, Markey’s Building Maintenance, Inc, but continued to hike the trail in his free time. Over time, Josh developed a love for trail running. He ran the Mason Dixon Trail as far south as Lock 15 and as far north as Green Branch Rd and could be found there running several times a week. It brings us comfort to know that Josh passed away in a place that brought him peace and happiness. We hope that any donations made in his name will go to the upkeep of the area of the Mason Dixon Trail that he loved so much.
We at the Mason-Dixon Trail System mourn Joshua's passing and want to assist the family in placing a memorial bench along his favorite section. You can also help by donating - any amount helps.
